The Book

Drive is a 2005 noir novel by American author James Sallis. The book was first published on September 1, 2005, through Poisoned Pen Press. In 2011, it was adapted into a feature film of the same name starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn with a screenplay by Hossein Amini. A sequel novel, Driven, was published in 2012.

The Film

Drive is a 2011 American action drama film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. The screenplay, written by Hossein Amini, is based on James Sallis's 2005 novel. The film stars Ryan Gosling as an unnamed Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver. He quickly grows fond of his neighbor, Irene and her young son, Benicio. When her debt-ridden husband, Standard, is released from prison, the two men take part in what turns out to be a failed million-dollar heist that endangers the lives of everyone involved. The film co-stars Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Christina Hendricks, and Ron Perlman.

Key Differences

Refn's film is a stylish neon-noir that strips Sallis's novel down to its iconic visual essence.
