The Book

A fifteen-year-old farm boy discovers a dragon egg, becomes a Dragon Rider, and is thrust into the perilous world of the Inheritance — an ancient conflict in the land of Alagaësia.

The Film

In his homeland of Alagaesia, a farm boy happens upon a dragon's egg -- a discovery that leads him on a predestined journey where he realizes he's the one person who can defend his home against an evil king.

Key Differences

The film omits many detailed world-building elements present in the book. The character development is simplified, especially for key supporting characters. The plot is condensed, resulting in the exclusion of important subplots and lore.

Our Verdict

Read the book first

The film lacks depth and complexity compared to the book, so it's recommended to read the book first for a fuller experience. The movie serves as a basic introduction but misses much of what makes the story compelling.
