Sisters Rose and Maggie Feller are as different as can be—one is a successful lawyer, the other a beautiful drifter. When Maggie discovers they have a grandmother they never knew existed, a journey of self-discovery begins for both of them.
Strait-laced Rose breaks off relations with her party girl sister, Maggie, over an indiscretion involving Rose's boyfriend. The chilly atmosphere is broken with the arrival of Ella, the grandmother neither sister knew existed.
The film simplifies some subplots and focuses more on the sisters' relationship. The character of Ella is given a larger role in the film. Some secondary characters and events are condensed or omitted for pacing.
The film balances well between staying true to the novel's core themes and adapting the story for cinematic pacing, making it enjoyable both as a movie and a complement to the book.
