The Book

Shrek is a solitary ogre who enjoys his swampy home. When fairytale characters invade his swamp, he must rescue a princess to get it back.

The Film

A grumpy ogre named Shrek embarks on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona for a mean lord who has exiled fairytale creatures to Shrek's swamp. Along the way, Shrek befriends a talkative donkey and discovers unexpected truths about the princess.

Key Differences

The film adds a comedic talking donkey character not present in the book. The princess Fiona has a secret ogre form in the film, which is not in the book. The film expands the story into a broader quest and includes many additional characters and subplots.

Our Verdict

Enjoy both!

The film adaptation adds humor, characters, and plot elements that enrich the story, making it enjoyable both as a film and a complement to the book. Watching the film alongside reading the book offers a fuller experience.
