The Book

A playwright becomes obsessed with a photograph of a beautiful actress from 1912, and finds a way to travel back in time to meet her.

The Film

A Chicago playwright uses self-hypnosis to travel back in time and meet the actress whose vintage portrait hangs in a grand hotel. He becomes deeply involved in a tragic romance that transcends time. The story explores themes of love, memory, and destiny.

Key Differences

The film simplifies some of the novel's darker psychological elements to focus more on romance. The character of the antagonist is less developed in the film. The novel includes more detailed descriptions of the time travel mechanism.

Our Verdict

Enjoy both!

The film captures the emotional core of the novel while making it accessible to a wider audience. Both the book and film offer complementary experiences that enrich understanding of the story.
