The Book

Eleven-year-old Lyra Belacqua lives in a parallel world where the human soul takes the form of an animal companion. She goes on a journey to the Arctic to rescue kidnapped children.

The Film

In a parallel universe, young Lyra Belacqua journeys to the far North to save her best friend and other kidnapped children from terrible experiments by a mysterious organization. Along the way, she uncovers dark secrets and discovers her own destiny.

Key Differences

The film omits the character of Iorek Byrnison's detailed backstory. The subtle political and religious themes present in the book are greatly toned down in the film. The film changes the ending to be less ambiguous and more conclusive.

Our Verdict

Read the book first

The film simplifies complex themes and storylines from the book, making it less faithful and more suitable for viewers who have read the novel first. Fans of the book may find the adaptation lacking in depth.
