The Book

Hassan Haji is a gifted cook whose family opens an Indian restaurant in France — directly opposite a Michelin-starred establishment — sparking a culinary and cultural rivalry.

The Film

The Kadam family leaves India for France where they open a restaurant directly across the road from Madame Mallory's Michelin-starred eatery. Cultural clashes and culinary rivalry ensue, but eventually lead to mutual respect and understanding.

Key Differences

The film simplifies some of the novel's deeper cultural and character complexities. The protagonist's culinary journey is more dramatized in the film. Certain secondary characters and subplots are reduced or omitted for pacing.

Our Verdict

Enjoy both!

The film balances entertainment with respect for the source material, making it enjoyable to both read and watch. Its faithfulness allows fans of the book to appreciate the adaptation while newcomers can enjoy the story on screen.
