The Book

A semi-autobiographical novel about the illicit relationship between a fifteen-year-old French girl and a wealthy Chinese man in 1930s colonial Vietnam.

The Film

In 1929 French Indochina, a French teenage girl embarks on a reckless and forbidden romance with a wealthy, older Chinese man, each knowing that knowledge of their affair will bring drastic consequences to each other.

Key Differences

The film condenses the novel's nonlinear narrative into a more straightforward chronological story. Some of the novel's introspective and poetic passages are omitted or simplified. The film reduces the depth of the protagonist's internal monologue and focuses more on visual storytelling.

Our Verdict

Enjoy both!

The film offers a visually compelling adaptation that captures the essence of the novel while making narrative adjustments for cinematic clarity. Both reading the book and watching the film provide complementary experiences that enrich understanding of the story.
