The Book

Amsterdam, 1686: eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman marries a wealthy merchant and receives a cabinet-sized replica of their house as a gift, fitted with miniatures that seem to predict the future.

The Film

In 17th century Amsterdam, a young bride receives a mysterious dollhouse from her husband and hires a miniaturist whose eerily accurate creations begin to reveal dark secrets about her new household. As the miniatures foreshadow real events, she must confront the hidden truths of her marriage and society.

Key Differences

The series condenses some subplots and characters for time constraints. The miniaturist's supernatural aura is toned down compared to the book. Some secondary characters' backstories are simplified or altered.

Our Verdict

Enjoy both!

The adaptation balances fidelity to the source material with the demands of a limited series format, making it enjoyable both as a watch and a companion to the book. Viewers benefit from experiencing both to appreciate the full depth of the story.
