A new translation and abridgement of one of the four classical Chinese novels - an epic story of warring factions in the era of China's Han dynasty Part historical and part legend, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms dramatizes the lives of feudal lords and their retainers, recounting their personal and military battles, intrigues, and struggles to achieve dominance for almost a hundred years. It is one of the most beloved works of East Asian literature, and the most famous historical novel in China.
Red Cliff or Chibi is a 2008–09 internationally co-produced epic war film produced and directed by John Woo. Based on the Battle of Red Cliffs and the events at the end of the Han dynasty and immediately prior to the Three Kingdoms period in Imperial China, it was Woo's first major film since 2003's Paycheck and his first Chinese-language feature film since 1992's Hard Boiled. The film stars Tony Leung Chiu-wai, with a supporting cast of Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Zhao Wei, Hu Jun, and Lin Chi-ling.
Character development differs between book and film. Some subplots were condensed for screen adaptation. Visual interpretation brings new perspective to the story.
Both versions offer unique perspectives that complement each other beautifully.
