The Book

American grifter Chester MacFarland and his wife meet the young Rydal Keener in Athens, setting off a deadly game of manipulation and deceit.

The Film

A thriller centered on a con artist, his wife, and a stranger who flee Athens after one of them is caught up in the death of a private detective. Their tense journey reveals deception, mistrust, and danger at every turn.

Key Differences

The film condenses some plot elements and character backgrounds for pacing. The setting is more visually stylized compared to the book's more subdued tone. The film adds more romantic tension between the main characters than the novel emphasizes.

Our Verdict

Enjoy both!

The film is a solid adaptation that captures the suspense and mood of the book while making some changes for cinematic effect. Both reading the novel and watching the film provide a fuller appreciation of the story.
