The Book

Set in the Depression-era circus world, Jacob Jankowski secretly joins the Benzini Brothers circus and falls in love with Marlena, the star performer and wife of the volatile animal trainer.

The Film

Jacob takes a job as an animal caretaker in a traveling circus. There he meets Marlena, a beautiful circus performer. Their shared compassion for a special elephant Rosie leads to love, but Marlena's cruel husband stands in their way.

Key Differences

The film condenses the timeline, focusing mainly on the romance and circus drama. Some secondary characters and subplots from the book are omitted or simplified. The book provides a deeper backstory for Jacob's later life, which the film only briefly touches upon.

Our Verdict

Enjoy both!

The film balances well between staying true to the book and delivering an engaging cinematic experience. Watching the film complements the reading, as both offer unique insights into the story.
