The Book

An elderly retired couple follows government advice in preparation for nuclear war. Jim and Hilda build a shelter, stock it with provisions, and wait as the bomb falls. A devastating and darkly comic graphic novel about innocence and propaganda.

The Film

A naive elderly British rural couple survive the initial onslaught of a nuclear war. They follow government advice to prepare for the worst, but soon face the harsh realities of fallout and devastation.

Key Differences

The film adds a more detailed depiction of the nuclear aftermath than the book. Some minor characters and scenes are expanded for emotional impact. The animation style adds a somber tone not present in the book's simpler illustrations.

Our Verdict

Enjoy both!

The film complements the book by visually expanding on its themes and emotions, making both valuable for a full understanding. Watching the film after reading enhances appreciation of the story's depth.
