The Book

Seventeen-year-old Novalee Nation is abandoned at a Walmart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma. Penniless and very pregnant, she secretly moves into the store and begins to build an extraordinary life with the help of the townspeople who adopt her.

The Film

A pregnant seventeen-year-old rebuilds her life after being abandoned by her boyfriend at a Walmart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma. She finds strength and community in unexpected places as she navigates motherhood and personal growth.

Key Differences

The film simplifies some of the book's deeper character backstories. Certain secondary characters are merged or omitted for brevity. The ending is more optimistic and less nuanced than in the novel.

Our Verdict

Read the book first

The film captures the spirit of the novel but lacks some of its depth and complexity, making it better to read the book first for a fuller experience.
